Update #2: As we've been monitoring throughout the day, Amazon is now also sold out of the PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim disc drive accessory, so if you had been planning to get one of these we strongly suggest you snap up any of the remaining stock available from PS Direct as soon as possible.

Update #1: While there is still plentiful availability of PS5’s detachable disc drive accessory, which can be affixed to either a PS5 Pro or PS5 Slim, supplies are gradually beginning to dwindle. The item is sold out at Best Buy in USA, and various other reports are coming in from around the world, where stock of the optional extra is beginning to evaporate. If you are planning to get a PS5 Pro and you do want a disc drive, we’d recommend snapping one of these up fast because who knows how long it’ll take for Sony to replenish stock?

Original Article: There’s been a sudden increase in sales of Sony’s optional PS5 disc drive, which can be fitted to both the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro. This week, the Japanese giant announced that it’d release its supercharged system for $699.99 in USA and £699.99 in the UK. However, the console will not include a Blu-ray slot, which will need to be purchased separately.

That’s prompted sales of the drive to rocket on sites like Amazon, where it’s currently the eighth best-selling video game item at the time of reporting, above popular items like the DualSense controller and Meta Quest 3. There’s a concern that the accessory could sell out, although stock still appears to be plentiful at retail and on Sony’s direct-to-consumer portal PS Direct.

Many fans are upset that PlayStation is charging a premium for the PS5 Pro without including a Blu-ray drive as standard. But while we agree the prices are simply too high across the board, we do think the detachable disc drive is an elegant solution to the changing landscape of physical media, giving consumers the option of whether they’d like to use one or not.
